Physiotherapist treating a patient's jaw

TMJ treatment in NW Calgary

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your jaw to your skull. When it, or the muscles around it, become irritated you may feel jaw pain, clicking, locking, headaches or stiffness, often worse in the morning or after eating. Physiotherapy is one of the most common treatments for TMJ problems, also called TMD (temporomandibular disorders), and at Crowchild Physiotherapy you can book directly, with no referral.

Signs of a TMJ problem

  • Pain in the jaw, in front of the ear or in the temples
  • Clicking, popping or grating when you open your mouth
  • Difficulty opening wide, or the jaw catching or locking
  • Headaches and facial or neck tension
  • Clenching or grinding, especially at night

TMJ problems can follow dental work, an injury such as whiplash or an airbag, stress-related clenching, or posture habits.

Questions about TMJ treatment

Anything else? Send us a request and the front desk will get back to you. Open 7 days a week, weekdays until 7 pm.

Can physiotherapy help with TMJ?
Yes. Most jaw problems involve the muscles and how the joint moves, which respond to hands-on treatment and exercise. Your physiotherapist tells you at the first visit whether physiotherapy is the right fit or whether you should see your dentist first.
Do I need a referral from my dentist?
No. You can book directly.
How many visits will I need?
Many people need a short course of treatment plus home exercises. You get an estimate at the first visit.
