How treatment is covered after an accident in Alberta
Alberta's Diagnostic and Treatment Protocols Regulation sets out how sprains, strains and whiplash-type injuries from a collision are treated and paid for. In plain terms:
- Your own insurer pays, whoever was at fault, through the Section B accident benefits on your policy.
- No referral is needed. A physiotherapist or chiropractor can assess you and start treatment under the protocols.
- Report the collision to your insurer promptly. Your notice of claim is due within 10 business days of the collision, or as soon as practicable; if more time has passed, care can usually still be arranged with the insurer.
- Treatment is pre-approved for the first 90 days after the collision, up to a set number of visits depending on the injury grade. Further treatment can be requested from the insurer if needed.
- Passengers, pedestrians and cyclists are covered too, usually through the vehicle's policy or their own.
Current details are on the Government of Alberta's page on automobile insurance injury treatment.

What we handle for you
- Forms. We complete the practitioner forms your insurer needs (the AB-2 treatment plan), based on your assessment, and send them in. You complete the notice of claim (AB-1) with your insurer; we can show you where to find it.
- Direct billing. We bill your insurer for protocol treatment.
- Coordination. If you have a lawyer, family doctor or adjuster involved, we provide progress reports when you ask us to.
- Extended care. If recovery takes longer than the protocol period, we help you request additional treatment from your insurer.
What you need when you call: your insurer's name, claim number if you have one, and the date of the collision. If you do not have a claim number yet, call anyway; we will help you get started.
Injuries we treat after a collision

The most common injury; stiffness and headaches that start a day or two after the crash.

including pain from bracing before impact and seat-belt loading.

Headache, dizziness, fogginess and light sensitivity, even without a head strike.

from the steering wheel, dashboard or airbag.

after airbag deployment or whiplash.

How your care is planned
- 1
Assessment
A physiotherapist or chiropractor examines you, grades the injury under the protocols and screens for anything that needs a doctor or emergency care first.
- 2
Treatment
Hands-on treatment, exercise and movement advice to settle pain and restore motion, with chiropractic and massage therapy added where they help. Everything happens under one roof, so one appointment can cover more than one service.
- 3
Review
Progress is checked against the protocol timeline and your own goals: driving comfortably, sleeping through the night, returning to work or sport.
- 4
Discharge or extension
Most protocol injuries settle within the pre-approved period. If yours has not, we document why and request further care.
Care-First auto insurance from 1 January 2027
Alberta's auto insurance system changes on 1 January 2027 to a care-based model. For collisions on or after that date, how treatment is accessed and billed will differ from the process above. We will publish a plain-language guide in December and update this page as the rules are confirmed. For a collision before that date, the current process applies.
