What our physiotherapists treat

Back pain, including pain that runs into the buttock or leg
Neck pain, and headaches that start in the neck
Sports and training injuries
Car accident injuries and whiplash
Workplace injuries
Dizziness, vertigo and balance problems
Concussion
Jaw pain and TMJ dysfunction
Pelvic floor concerns, including after pregnancy
  • Shoulder, elbow and wrist injuries
  • Hip, knee and ankle injuries
  • Recovery after surgery or a fracture
  • Arthritis and stiff joints

If your problem is not on the list, call us. The assessment tells us whether physiotherapy is the right starting point or whether our chiropractor or a massage therapist would help more.

What happens at your first physiotherapy visit

  1. 1

    We listen and assess

Your physiotherapist asks about your history, your goals and what makes things better or worse, then examines how you move, your strength and the painful area. Allow up to an hour for your first visit.

  2. 2

You get an explanation and a plan

You leave knowing what we think is going on, what treatment involves, roughly how many visits to expect and what you can do at home.

  3. 3

    Treatment and exercises

Your physiotherapist explains each technique before using it, and you leave with exercises to do at home.

You complete a short intake form at the clinic when you arrive, so come ten minutes early.

How we treat

The mix depends on your assessment, not on a set recipe.

  • Manual therapy: joint mobilization and soft-tissue techniques to restore movement
  • Exercise therapy: a home program that changes as you improve, with exercises you can follow between visits
  • Dry needling for tight, painful muscles
  • Cupping and spinal traction where they suit the problem
  • Vestibular rehabilitation for dizziness, BPPV and balance problems
  • Pelvic health physiotherapy
  • Education on activity, work and sport, so progress holds between visits

Both are registered physiotherapists, which is what most benefit plans require for direct billing. We also use the term physical therapy on this page because many patients search for it; in Alberta the regulated title is physiotherapist.

Insurance and direct billing

We bill most benefit plans directly, and treatment after a car accident or workplace injury is billed to your auto insurer or to WCB. You do not need a doctor's referral to see a physiotherapist in Alberta, though some benefit plans ask for one before they reimburse you.

Questions about physiotherapy

Anything else? Send us a request and the front desk will get back to you. Open 7 days a week, weekdays until 7 pm.

Do I need a referral?
No. You can book directly. If your benefit plan requires a doctor's note for reimbursement, it will say so in your plan details.
Is physiotherapy covered by Alberta Health Care?
Alberta Health Care does not generally pay for physiotherapy at a private clinic. Physiotherapy at a private clinic is usually paid through workplace or private benefits, a car accident or WCB claim, or privately. Some publicly funded physiotherapy is available through Alberta Health Services in specific situations; ask your doctor whether you qualify.
How many visits will I need?
It depends on the problem and how long you have had it. Your physiotherapist gives you an estimate at the first visit and reviews it as you progress. We do not ask you to commit to a package of visits.
What should I wear?
Clothes that let us see and move the area: shorts for a hip or knee, a tank top for a shoulder or neck. Gowns and draping are available.
Should I see a physiotherapist or a chiropractor?
Both treat back, neck and joint pain. Physiotherapy leans on movement, exercise and hands-on treatment; chiropractic care centres on joint adjustment. At Crowchild they work in the same clinic, so start with whichever you prefer and we will involve the other if it would help. Chiropractic →
